ASHRAM SCHOOL IN OMKARESHWAR

About eighty kilometers south of Indore is the ancient pilgrimage center of Lord Shiva called Omkareshwar. The site is actually an island in the middle of the holy Narmada River, which flows along either side.

Situated on a picturesque hillside leading down to the banks of the river is the Anandamayi Ma ashram founded by Her great disciple, Swami Kedarnath. On the hill above the ashram, Swami Kedarnath and his colleagues have founded a thriving school for the local village tribal children. These children, known as Adivasis, come from the poorest possible conditions and have no other opportunity for education and advancement in life. They are given all services free of charge and are equipped with school uniforms, as well as casual clothes, books and study materials, and a nutritious daily meal.

The school was started in July 2001, with only the first three standards, adding an additional grade each year. To date, the school offers up to tenth standard and houses more than 350 students. Their goal is to eventually have a campus that provides quality education up to 12th Standard, with a study area, auditorium, library and sanitary facilities. Vocational training and college entrance assistance are also being incorporated into the education programs.
